Necessary Tools for Making your Mineral Makeup

Very often we read online or in books that we need a lot of tools in making mineral makeup but in fact if you are just making it for self use and friends you don't really need all those tools.

All you need for special equipments are the absolutely essential ones: a good scale, some measuring spoons and a blender. All of these should be used only for cosmetic puposes. Sure enough you don't want to have a meal spiced up with mineral makeup :D

First, you will need an electric balance. This is especially important if you wish to remake what you have created. A good scale for cosmetic measurement should be able to measure in 2 decimal places. If you were in science class you probably have seen a big one before that looks like this:

  

This kind are very good for science projects as it can easily measure up to 4 decimal places. However, it is way more expensive and generally a balance that measures up to 2 decimal places are good enough. Therefore, you might want a smaller balance like the following:

This balance can weigh 300 grams of powder in maximum and gives an accurate weight measurement to 0.01 gram. I picked this up from a street market for less than 20 bucks. You will be able to find something cheaper definitely but I chose this because it was the best of its kind in my area.

You should use this to measure your iron oxide because it is an extremely sensitive colourant. A 0.1 g difference will ruin the shade and tone of your makeup. I do not recommend using your food balance in the kitchen as it rounds up to 1 gram in its measurement. It can change a foundation to a blush.  

Second, you would want some measuring spoons. You will want a set of spoons that has a very tiny spoon as their smallest one. 

The smallest spoon at the bottom is very good for adjusting the colour of your makeup. The bigger ones can be used for base powder.

You should use the smallest spoon to take out the iron oxide and measure it with the balance. Remember to measure the weight of your spoon before you take your iron oxide out and do the subtraction to see who many grams of iron oxide you used.

You might think there is no need to use an electric balance if you have a very small spoon for the pigments. But by the time you attempt to recreate your makeup you will realise how different the colour can become. So if you really want to have recreate your makeup accurately, make sure you have an electric balance :)

Finally, the last and absolutely important thing you need is a blender strong enough to blend your makeup together without streaking. A lot of mineral makeup users praise the blender "Magic Bullet". But I think any blender equally powerful can do the same trick. Depending on the portion of makeup you make, you best blender can range from a small coffee grinder to a giant blender. For a small portion, a coffee grinder is best.

But for a bigger portion, a blender is better. This is my blender:

 

A Magic Bullet blender has only a 350 watts motor. With that reference, you can shop whatever blender that has grinder blades with similar power.
